All we are is dust in the wind, dude.

I hate “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas. I think my hatred of this song can best be described by a conversation I had with some guy last night when the song started playing on the radio:

Bellesouth: (Uproarious laughter)

Dude-friend: What? What’s so funny?

Bellesouth: It’s “Dust in the fucking wind!” (Continued uproarious laughter.)

Guy: What – I don’t get it. It’s not funny.

Bellesouth: Oh, you know. It’s like this song that these classic rock douchebags listen to and act like it’s all meaningful and has substance and what-not. Like the song just has the greatest lyrics ever.

Guy: Oh yeah, I know what you’re talking about. Like some guy listens to the song and takes a bong hit and then is like, “Yeah, man…this is what it’s all about.”

Bellesouth: “Only for a moment, then the moment’s gone.”

Bellesouth and Guy: (Laughter.)

And then I told him about how this scene in Bill and Ted just said it all:

We actually have a friend who is named Dustin. His parents named him that because of this song. No joke. And now, since I learned that, every time I hear it, the lyrics are not “Dust in the Wind,” but “Dustin Dewin,” as if The Wind became a middle name. I’m a nut.

I have a soft spot for Kansas and “Dust in the Wind.” It’s one of those songs that assists 14 year olds in realizing that they are not the center of the universe and that they don’t really matter much in the grand scheme of things. I have a hard time faulting it for being simplistic and adolescent, since that’s pretty much the definition of rock and roll and pop music in general.

Yes! I love it! (I love that song, though. Don’t judge me.)

I do not judge you!!! The song actually does have some beautiful harmonies in it and shows off the vocal talents of the band. :)
