Review: Michael Jackson BAD25 Boxed Set

01 - Album Artwork

Twenty-five years ago, one of the most incredible moments occurred: The release of Michael Jackson’s chart-topping album, BAD, which elevated Jackson to international-icon status.

His third solo album, BAD was the first in which almost all the songs were written by Michael. It was also the first album to have five consecutive #1 singles. In addition to the title track, BAD included such amazing hits as “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Leave Me Alone,” “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” and my personal favorite, “Smooth Criminal.” The album also spawned nine short music films, all compiled in the film Moonwalker.

I was ten years old when BAD was released in 1987, and it was truly a special time for music. So I jumped at the chance to listen to BAD25, a special 3-CD, Single-DVD 25th-anniversary edition of this historically significant musical masterpiece. This set is complete with digitally-remastered tracks on the first CD; a second CD with demos, outtakes and remixes from Nero, Pitbull and Afrojack; and a third CD featuring the sound truck tracks from Michael’s July 16, 1988 performance at Wembley Stadium. This will mark the first authorized live Michael Jackson album. BAD25 also includes the first-ever authorized DVD release of the Wembley performance. This boxed set is truly a must-have for any Michael Jackson fan.

The digital remasters give you much more luscious, rich sound to the original tracks, without adding anything extra. I recommend listening to it in full surround-sound; even if it’s just in your car stereo. It is powerful and packs a punch. You will find yourself singing along, saying, “Oh yes, I forgot about that track!”, and maybe even grooving to the music.

Of all the tracks on the digital remaster, “Bad” and “Smooth Criminal” stand out the most. You really get a feel of every level of these tracks and just how complex they were.

The second CD features a remix of Bad by Pitbull. I absolutely loathe this track. Normally I don’t have anything against Pitbull, but adding hip-hop freestyle over the track is really in… just hideous taste. It’s like over-seasoning your food to the point in which it becomes inedible. However, I do love Nero’s remix of “Speed Demon,” which was one of my least-favorite tracks from Bad. It makes it danceable, fun and up-to-date.

One of the most magical tracks is a previously-unreleased French version of “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You.” This is my favorite ballad from the album, and the translation makes it a truly beautiful love song. The Spanish version, which got some airplay in the U.S., is also on the second CD.

The live tracks are amazing, clear, and how a live album should sound (with more of the artist’s performance and the audience serving as background). It reminds me of how massive Jackson’s world tour was during the time, and how people all over the world came to see his sold-out performances. The recording features tracks from BAD as well as his earlier works. Check out this live performance of Human Nature from the concert:

Absolutely breathtaking. As I said, you’re definitely going to want to add this to your collection.

With that, I’m so excited to add a GIVEAWAY to this review! One lucky winner will get this complete boxed set! You will not want to miss out on it, so enter here!

I was excited to have the opportunity to work with One Media Squared and Sony Music Entertainment and they were kind enough to give me the opportunity to review Michael Jackson Bad25. All opinions are my own.
