I’m here in this gorgeous house in a gorgeous neighborhood. At my disposal is a Wii, all the movie channels I could ever imagine having, plenty of adult beverages in the cabinet, and a jet bathtub. I don’t have any of these amenities in my own home.
And I’ve spent most of my time watching C-SPAN2 today. Because it has seriously been the best thing I have watched all day.
Or actually, it hasn’t. Watching the Senate debate over a squillion-dollar economic stimulus package has been much like watching a really gruesome train wreck.
For most of the time I watched it, it was Republicans being all douchey and saying things like “Do we REALLY need money for tree-planting?” and “This amendment is supported by all these lobbying groups who gave me lots of money.”
First of all, yes – we need money for tree-planting. Because lo and behold, trees are GOOD for cities. They help provide shade. They make our surroundings a bit greener. And they give work to blue-collar nursery workers.
And secondly, I really don’t give a rat’s ass what lobbying organizations are advocating an amendment for a stimulus package. This is MY stimulus. As far as I’m concerned, the businesses already got their bailouts.
But anyway, you can’t please everyone all of the time and they’ve got to do all this nitpicking at the stimulus package before they get the 60 votes in senate necessary to pass it for all of us. So on C-SPAN 2, all day we’ve seen mostly dudes in stuffy suits who are trying to please their
donors constituents. All this bargaining is really annoying me.
Because really – and the thing is, no matter what they do in Washington, it is a gamble. But it’s a gamble we need. Because things are NOT good for a whole lotta people. And when things aren’t good for them, everything else gets dragged down into all of it.
Anyway, I’m ready for them to pass the dang thing. A big part of the package I’m interested in is$21 billion to subsidize COBRA insurance payments for those like me who have to continue their coverage through a COBRA. Right now I’m facing having to pay $338 a month to keep my health insurance. So. That’s kinda shitty. Because Bellesouth needs her inhaler and her meds and stuff.
Anyway, it looks like they’re honing down onto some kind of an agreement.
And in other news, another person I worked with was laid off today. Sigh. I hope the bad news ends.
I’m going to do my best to avoid news tomorrow. Dang, I couldn’t even type that with a straight face.
