As a caregiver, I sometimes have to monitor many vitals and other conditions if my mother gets extremely sick, so I’m really glad I was given the opportunity to receive the Santamedical Digital Blood Pressure Monitor in exchange for an honest review.

As the caregiver of a dialysis patient, it’s extremely important – especially in the winter, when sickness and weather conditions may prohibit mom from making her dialysis appointment. I have to be on the ball and constantly checking her conditions. And when I have to call an ambulance, it greatly helps dispatch, the paramedics and Emergency Room staff to know exactly what her levels are up to the time I arrive.

Blood pressure is extremely important for the dialysis patient to monitor. A drop in blood pressure is the most common problem for dialysis patients when significant amounts of fluid are removed. Your blood pressure levels can be the difference between being eligible for treatment or not – and blood pressure should be checked at home if the patient is experiencing dizziness or nausea (the symptoms of low blood pressure).

The Santamedical Digital Blood Pressure Monitor came to the rescue over the weekend when Mom was experiencing loss of fluids and dehydration. I checked her levels, and while they weren’t extremely low, they caused enough concern in me to immediately give her a frozen electrolyte pop to supply her with electrolytes to rehydrate her and get her levels back to normal. After a good night’s sleep, she was much better the next day and was able to attend her dialysis appointment.

wpid-20150121_114634.jpg

To use the monitor, you simply wrap it around your wrist so the screen is facing palm-up. Sit near a level surface, put your elbow down and raise your arm to the level of your heart. Press the “on” button, you’ll feel the slight squeeze of the monitor’s cuff, and you’ll get your readings within a few seconds.

The Santamedical Digital Blood Pressure Monitor comes with a user’s manual, as well as a chart that shows you how to interpret your readings.

I’m very proud of my blood pressure, which has been optimal for as long as I’ve been around. Let’s hope it stays that way!

wpid-wp-1422486203196.jpeg
When you’re done with your monitor, you can put it in an included storage container that can easily go with all your other medical supplies.

wpid-20150121_115428.jpg

The Santamedical Wrist Digital Blood Pressure Monitor can be purchased here from Amazon. Whether you are a caregiver, a patient, or someone who just wants to keep track of your health, this is a great product to have around!

This is one amazing box of chocolates.

chocolate.collection.42.pk.000_1

The 42-piece Valentine’s Day Constellation Chocolate Collection, available exclusively at IfOnly. the amazing culinary artistry of 21 award-winning and Michelin-starred chefs, this is the Motherlode of all Valentine’s chocolate gifts.

Let’s inspect some of what’s in this box:

– a caramel, Maldon sea salt and vanilla blend from Michael Mina
– a smooth dark chocolate truffle with single-origin cacao from Traci Des Jardins
– oven-roasted bananas
– maple and sage
– Oh, and by the way, there’s chocolate in it.

This box is available for $150, but you can also purchase the 21-piece collection for $75 or the 9-piece collection (from nine chefs) for $32. All boxes include the Mina and Des Jardins creations, and all are guaranteed to be the kind of boxes for which you or your special one will likely find a secret hiding place and take the time to slowly appreciate all the fine work put into these amazing things.

Can you tell that I love chocolate? I also appreciate the work of chefs, so I’m glad to note that a portion of the proceeds of these sales will go to benefit the James Beard Foundation. Here’s a bit of info:

Founded in 1986, the James Beard Foundation’s mission is to celebrate, nurture, and honor America’s diverse culinary heritage through programs that educate and inspire. A cookbook author and teacher with an encyclopedic knowledge about food, James Beard, who died in 1985, was a champion of American cuisine. He helped educate and mentor generations of professional chefs and food enthusiasts, instilling in them the value of wholesome, healthful and delicious food. Today the Beard Foundation continues in the same spirit by administering a number of diverse programs that include educational initiatives, food industry awards, scholarships for culinary students, publications, chef advocacy training, and thought-leader convening.

I have seen many friends find their passion through the culinary arts, so it’s good to know there is an organization willing to foster those passions.

In order to receive these by Valentine’s Day, you can order for east-coast recipients through Feb. 5, 2015. For other parts of the country, Feb. 8 is the deadline.

I’ve been my mom’s caregiver for – oh, about five, six years now – and the assumptions and questions from people I talk are so interesting. I think a lot of people think that as a caregiver, I’m taking care of someone who is homebound and without independence. That’s not the case in my life.

My mom is a functioning person with malfunctioned kidneys. She drives herself to the dialysis clinic three times a week for what I call her “part-time job.” She goes to the grocery store. Picks up her own medicine. Does chores, makes her breakfast in the morning.

There are times when she is unable to do those things by herself, but I step in every day in many other ways.

So, these are the things I have to do as a caregiver:

Monitoring. Mom can check her blood sugar and blood pressure, but I take notice of changes in my mom’s body that she may not notice. I was the first person to bring up her tube-shaped nails that led to her renal failure diagnosis. I also have to check her feet for any cuts or drastic changes (foot health is very difficult for diabetics), and give her that extra push to get things checked out. They may be benign, but even benign things can turn into disasters if they aren’t monitored properly.

Personal care. While I don’t have to be with my mom every second she’s in the bathroom, I do have to help her with some personal care. I always have to be around when she showers. I must properly cover her dialysis port so it won’t get wet. I must stay in her adjacent bedroom  in case she has a fall. And when she gets out of the shower, I help her dry off (feet are again very important here) and I remove her port dressing. I also have to help apply lotion to her feet if needed (and we are finding it is likely needed every morning and evening).

Power of attorney. We have the security in knowing that if anything happens to mom, I can have her admitted to the hospital. I can also take on her finances in her place if the need arises. Mom still pays her bills on her own.  I do things like going online to check her bank balance, taking care of financial matters if she is hospitalized or in skilled care, and offering support and guidance with financial concerns.

A completely functional pair of hands. I am the one in charge of opening all cans, opening most packages, plugging and unplugging mom’s phone to charge (her nails make it very difficult), and doing lots of things that require strong hands or strong fingernails. I also use my hands to do things like change the Wii back to the cable box so she can watch television. This is important!

Companionship. Mom’s only outside world is that of the grocery store, the pharmacy, her doctors’ offices, and the dialysis clinic. And they all ADORE her. I provide her with someone to talk with, joke with, watch movies with, eat with. Okay, maybe she provides me some of the same.

So, caregiving, for me, is not all driving, sponge baths and bedpans. I help my mother live her life. My job as a caregiver is not for her to be dependent on me, but for me to help her live as independently as possible.

If you have not seen or heard of Erin Condren and her Life Planners you need to head over to herwebsite now.  I was introduced to Erin Condren Life Planners a LONG time ago by my sister-in-law. I thought ha they can’t be that great, I don’t need one….that is ridiculous  to spend that much money. I am here to tell you I have been corrected three times and I am receiving my fourth one this week. Someone gifted me my planner this year so I am giving back by giving away a LIFE PLANNER for FREE!! Read through my review of why you should purchase a planner and then enter to win. (If you have a planner already you can still enter, I will let you choose a address book or wedding planner!) Oh, and there are over $150 worth of other prizes to win!

#erincondren #lifeplanner #review #giveaway

I could probably give you multiple reasons to purchase an erin condren life planner but I narrowed it to five, yes only five reason.

  1. THE PRICE: When you spend a $1 on something you don’t really care too much if it gets drenched in water or lost in the truck for four months. However, when you spend $25 or more on an item you respect it. You realize that you spent your hard earned money and you will utilize the item for it’s job. In this case you will use the Life planner you will enjoy it. You will use it and your life will be more organized. When you are organized you tend to earn and save more money, be less stressed, and spend time wisely.
  2. SIZE: The size of this planner is absolutely perfect. I don’t know about you but I need my LIFE planner to go wherever my LIFE takes me. So, I need it to fit inside my purse, gym bag, bible study bag, bible case, library bag, etc. This planner is 7.25″ X 9.25″ and has fit in every purse or bag I have ever put it in. Even my Crossbody bags from Vera, Coach, and Kors.
  3. CUSTOMIZATION: I love that you can customize this planner down to a t. I wanted Dark purple and Light purple combo this year with a hint of girlie. I got to pick a design that I loved then customize it with my preferred color combo, name, and more. you can also customize with a picture, quote, etc. Not to mention that you can add a band, pen holder. They also have coil clips that you can add things to the planner like a menu, to do list, pictures, etc.
  4. QUALITY: If you are spending the money you expect quality right?! Right! Well with Erin Condren you get it. The paper quality is thick 90% of pens I find DO NOT BLEED through. However, you will see in pictures below that I don’t write very much. I use stickers and washi tape a LOT like most ECLP junkies!
  5. I LOVE ME: Some may not agree with this reason but I rarely care what people think. I love planning out my week on my ECLP. I love including little stickers for the fun things, and even the not so fun doctor appointments. I keep track of my weight, water intake, weigh ins, workouts, calories, bible study, church, baby milestones, photography sessions, scentsy parties, birthdays…okay, okay you get the point. This thing runs my life. You will be so happy and love yourself because you will have time for yourself. You pencil it in here and there but you make time for yourself. Don’t believe me? Enter to win this giveaway below or make your purchase here!

A few months ago, I was telling my therapist a story about when Sebastian and I went to check the mailbox down the street. I explained to her that Seabass said to me, “hey, let’s go for a walk,” and so we walked along a trail less than a block over.

“How do you know he said that?” my therapist asked. “I just know what he’s saying,” I said.

Even without language, we can form communicative bonds with our animals. I’ve had Sebastian for five years now, so it’s become second nature to me.

I know that when Sebastian is looking off somewhere else, he wants to explore that area. I know that when he kicks his food dispenser over and looks at me, it’s time to feed him. I know that when he grabs a stuffed animal or a shoe that doesn’t belong to him and starts flinging it from side to side, pausing to look at me, that he really needs to go outside and he has tried all other outlets to grab my attention.

Other things I know my dog is saying:
