Dialysis patients like my mom need more proteins in their diet. Protein keeps wastes from building up, so it’s an essential element for those who cannot remove waste conventionally. My mom has trouble eating meats, so it’s hard to get protein in her diet.

So that’s what I was looking for when I tried Summit Nutrition Whey Protein Isolate powder. I got the Vanilla flavor – which I like because mom 1) doesn’t care for chocolate shakes, and 2) I could add it to the foods that she likes.

Instead of making shakes out of the powder, I would use one packet throughout the day. I sneaked it into a milkshake for Mom. I stirred it in cinnamon applesauce. I added it to her coffee as a creamer. It was great (although it did not melt in the coffee; I suggested she put it in her cup before adding the coffee.)

One packet of the stuff contains a whopping 26g of protein, and also has zero fat, cholesterol or sugar. All of these are also important for my mom’s diet, because her kidney failure is related to her diabetes.

This product is geared toward those looking for sports nutrition supplements, but I think I have found something that I can give mom on days when it is all she can take to chew on something, and when she needs protein. I’m really glad this is around, and I hope more dialysis patients look to whey protein products like those from Summit Nutrition to help their diets.

I have been using Peppermint Oil for about a decade. It’s great to add to baths if I need to wake up, and it’s also really good for helping clear my sinuses if I’m congested or experiencing allergies.

Adovia 100% Pure Peppermint Essential Oil comes in a HUGE 4-oz bottle, and because it is so strong, it must be diluted before it is used. Tonight, my mother was having COPD symptoms, and to help aid her breathing, I applied some diluted peppermint oil to her chest using a rag. After doing this and helping her use her prescription inhaler, she went from taking short, panicked breaths and asking to go to the emergency room, to breathing normally. Did the Peppermint Oil help medicinally? That’s inconclusive, but I know my mom felt a bit easier with the strong but pleasant scent.

I cannot stress how much this needs to be diluted. It can either be combined with a carrier oil or with water. Trust me, open this bottle and you will understand the importance of the dilution! In fact, I have a glass of peppermint oil diluted in about a cup of water sitting in my bathroom right now and it is minty fresh!

I cannot make any confirmation to the claims that peppermint oil eases stomach discomfort or anxiety – I rarely am queasy, and when I am anxious I prefer calming sources that include prescription medication and more soothing oils like lavender. I also firmly trust the physicians who have saved my mother’s life and will always recommend you seek a doctor’s help first when starting any home remedies.

When I first started purchasing essential oils, I would buy small one-ounce bottles at chain boutiques for about $10. At $11.89, this Adovia oil is a great bargain and is guaranteed to last for an extremely long time.

People like my mom have to limit their liquids. Mom is in kidney failure, and because her kidneys do not function, she cannot process liquids normally. She cannot drink the recommended 8 glasses of water a day, but rather sip to get along. As a result, her skin is extremely dry and becomes extremely itchy. There have been many times when I have found scabbing all over her back from where she has scratched her dry skin.

It’s really sad to see her in this state if internal and external dehydration. But one thing that has helped ease her difficulties is rosehip oil, like this Foxbrim Organic Rosehip Seed Oil.

I have used other Rosehip oil on mom before, but what I really like about this oil is that it is dispensed with a pump. Most essential oils are dispensed with a dropper, and if you are trying to use it to moisturize, it can get pretty messy when trying to use it on a large area of skin. With this, there is a lot less mess to deal with, and there’s easy application.

Mom loves how soothing it feels, and whenever I apply it, her skin stops itching. Now, I can’t be behind mom every second of the day for rosehip oil duty, but this does make things a bit easier on her.

I am always looking for ways to make my mom’s life better as her caregiver. This is highly recommended, and if it can help my mother’s illness-related, extremely dry skin, it might be able to help your dry, itchy skin as well.

20150415_212850_20150415213516197

I’ve said this recently and I will say it again: As a petsitter, I see a lot of what goes into dogs, and a lot of what comes out of them. You can definitely tell the quality of a dog’s diet just by seeing how hard it is to clean up after him. For an otherwise healthy dog, the harder it is to clean up, the less quality his diet is. So I pay a lot of attention to my dog’s digestive health, as well as that of my clients’ dogs. Diarrhea, scooting and constipation are all issues to keep on the lookout for in your pooch. Sebastian has had giardia twice – that’s an easily obtainable bug that a dog can get from standing water, and it causes horrible diarrhea.

So, while I can make no scientific claims about the necessity or lackthereof of probiotics for your dog, I don’t see how they could hurt your dog. Their effectiveness is still being studied, although preliminary studies have shown improvement in GI health for dogs.

Paw Choice Probiotic Chews come in a small-sized, chewy treat. They are supposedly filled with “good” bacteria that should aid in his overall wellness. I know that’s a general term, but that’s what the advertising for this product says.

20150415_212930

One chew is all my 18-pound dog needs each day. Sebastian, always the great product tester, tried these out.  Let’s see how he likes ‘em.

20150415_21300820150415_213012

He likes ‘em!!!

I think it’s a bit early to determine whether or not this will help Sebastian out. Sebastian’s diet changes often as he is given new and exciting foods and treats to try out. But my hope is that with these chews, I will see a dog who shows how healthy he is by what comes out of him. I will update this post eventually as I see how or if the chews make a difference.

Big fan of meal replacements here. Really just looking for items that are filling, great as snacks, portable, and a great way to get some nutrients in me in between meals. (I don’t look at meal replacement bars or shakes as actual meals, but rather supplements to a balanced diet.)

Nutraplex sent me a couple of bars to try out – their Megaberry and Pineapple Coconut varieties. These bars are kind of a grown-up fruit roll-up or snack – they’re really sweet, fruity, but also are definitely full of goodies that those sugary snacks targeted at kids don’t have. It’s also very good for those with food allergies and special diets. It’s Gluten-Free, Soy-free, Dairy-Free, Kosher, Vegetarian, and also has antioxidants and fiber.

The Megaberry bar is pretty dang amazing. It has acai berries, blueberries cranberries, raspberries and strawberries. That is a lot of berry in one bar! As someone who is allergic to stone fruits like cherries and plums, I loved that I could eat this without any allergic reactions.

The Pineapple-Coconut bar is kind of – eh. Don’t get me wrong, I love tropical flavors. But somehow, when they’re in the form of this concentrated bar, they just don’t seem right. I also didn’t care too much for the texture of the coconut, which amazes me since I love coconuts. But if you’re a fan of that texture and of tropical flavors, and also want something that is a bit different than the standard fruit bar, I’d recommend this.

These bars are pretty small, so again, I wouldn’t eat one as an entire meal. But take one when hiking, put one in your desk at work, keep some on hand at home for when you’re having cravings. definitely worth having on hand.

Back in the middle of last DECADE, a friend of mine gave me a Mighty Wallet with a beautiful design on it. I wore the crud out of that thing. I am not a purse-carrier, so it went in the back of my jeans pocket.

Here’s the ol’ wallet in all its glory.

collage_20150331180251612_20150331180259187

In the past seven years or so, that wallet has sustained travel, weather, accidental trips to the washing machine and dryer, and more. So when I talk about the Dinomighty Mighty Wallet, I am not joking. My website says no BS, and I mean it. This thing is a wallet owner’s dream. It will endure lots and lots of use and abuse, and that is why I was not only excited but ENTHUSIASTIC to review a new Mighty Wallet and tell you all the wonderful things about it.

Here is my new wallet. What I LOVE about these is that there are a seemingly infinite number of designs. This would be perfect to take to the grocery store or the Farmer’s Market.

11091486_10152818650293175_5039974639350646753_n

The Mighty Wallet is made with Tyvek. Think about the kind of material you see in an Air Mail, Priority Mail or Express Mail envelope you see at the post office. It is extremely sturdy and designed to go through all kinds of beatings without tearing one bit. And, it is 100% recyclable!! You can even send your wallet BACK to Dinomighty and they’ll recycle it for you. Nice, huh?

I did a short comparison video on Instagram to show you how durable the old wallet still is.

And here, you can see me count the number of pockets that are in this wallet. You can hold a TON of stuff in these skinny things. Amazing!

The #MightyWallet has a ton of storage in it. #review

Hey, want to win a lovely mesh laundry bag to take care of your delicates and keep your socks together? Check out my review and get the details on how to win one of these!

I have a confession to make: I have the World’s Largest Collection of Unmatched Socks.

10429481_10152786609388175_5949313847850906264_n

Before you chime in and say “you haven’t seen our family collection of socks!”, keep in mind: These are all MY socks. MINE. And over several years they have lost their friends in horrible battles in the laundry area. Sometimes socks get eaten by the dryer. It’s some evil sorcery built into these, I tell you!

The Washguard lingerie bag not only keeps my most delicate items secure – we’re talking about lace camis that tend to get caught up in the washer, bras that somehow end up wrapped around the agitator (what an appropriate name, right?) and, of course, socks that somehow disappear into thin air.

These are so incredibly handy, and the material on these is very strong but delicate mesh. It’s not going to get caught on zippers or anything else on non-delicate clothing items. And when you’re done, all your items are secure! It’s amazing!

I’m making this giveaway EXTREMELY EASY to enter. There’s just one entry required, no daily entries, none of that, this is just a fun, simple giveaway. Good luck, and I hope you win!

I grew up in as a preacher’s kid in the South, where one of the rules is that you attend every single church potluck going on. It’s the law: If you prepare anything savory for a church potluck, you have to sprinkle on the paprika. Deviled Eggs, casseroles, potato salad… you name it!

So paprika is pretty much a staple in every southern person’s home. But I’d never tried smoked Spanish paprika. What’s the difference?

The difference is AMAZING.

Both varieties of Kiva Smoked Spanish Paprika have your beloved paprika taste, but with an amazing smoky flavor that adds a little something extra to your dishes. And it isn’t a fake smoked-taste as well. Typically, I’m not a fan of smoked foods, but these spices are amazing.

10590590_10152778123898175_710238297550742495_n

For the Hot Smoked Paprika, I decided to sprinkle it on some Pierogies before baking them. Simply take frozen pierogies, sprinkle them with Kiva Hot Smoked Spanish Paprika, coat with non-stick cooking spray, bake on one side at 375 for about 8 minutes, flip and repeat.

Makes an amazing and flavorful appetizer. I highly recommend serving with Greek yogurt.

I decided to prepare Mom some scallops to celebrate her birthday. First time preparing them! I browned them, and sauteed them in a sauce made of butter, lemon, salt, pepper and Kiva Sweet Smoked Spanish Paprika. MMMM! What an AMAZINGLY delicious dish. I know it doesn’t look pretty, but as you know, I am in the business of preparing food for function and taste. AMAZING!

These paprika flavors would go amazing on deviled eggs, macaroni and cheese, creamed spinach… the possibilities are endless!

Sebastian loves being the test subject for all these dog foods, but I have to say the products I’ve had by Stewart Pet have been the absolute best so far. They have extremely simple and healthy ingredients, switching to them is very easy on his stomach, and he finds them extremely tasty. This time, Sebastian got to try Stewart Naturals Freeze-Dried Patties, and he really enjoyed them.

Ingredients and what they do to the canine body are what I’m going to focus on here.

Sebastian has a really hard time eating foods with corn as the first ingredient. Unfortunately, that is what you’re going to find with the most popular dog food brands. I can definitely see a difference if he eats corn-based food – and it isn’t pretty. Horrible digestive issues. Running outside to do his business. Diarrhea. Loose stools. Now, the vet did tell me corn is an excellent source of fiber, and that although corn gets a bad rap, it can be good for some dogs. My response: Just not for Sebastian.

As a petsitter, I see a lot of what dogs eat. I also happen to see what comes out of dogs’ bodies. This week I am taking care of some adorable chihuahuas who are on an amazing diet. It is a combination of dry, grain-free food, quality canned food, and raw food. They’re extremely easy to clean up afterwards, and their systems are pretty regular.

I’ve taken care of dogs who eat food that you can purchase at any chain drug store, and it is a totally different story. Extremely difficult cleanup. Mooshy stools. impossible to completely get off the grass. Very sad.

But some dogs eat this food and are fine. Just like with humans, every dog’s body is different.

But I know that what you put in a dog can really have an impact on what comes out of him. It’s just like with humans: If your poop looks weird, there’s probably something going on with your diet that you need to change.

Here are the ingredients in Stewart Raw Naturals Freeze-Dried Patties: Beef, Beef Heart, Beef Liver, Ground Beef Bone, Broccoli, Carrots, Beef Kidney, Lettuce, Apples, Ground Flaxseed, Inulin, Salmon Oil, Apple Cider Vinegar, Blueberry, Cranberry, Dried Kelp, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Chloride, Whole Ginger, Whole Parsley, Whole Garlic, Montmorillonite Clay, Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Vitamin E Supplement, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Mixed Tocopherols (as preservative), Vitamin D Supplement.

There’s one ingredient in there that struck me and made sense: Ginger. Ginger is known as a settling agent for nausea. I have read that Ginger is great to settle a dog’s stomach and even calm him down before a long car ride. So it made sense when this food didn’t really result in adverse reactions on Sebastian’s part. There was no dash to the back door. No gas. No heaving. Nothing. He just really enjoyed his food.

And here he is, enjoying his food. The second of these videos shows you but one way to prepare it for your dog. It can be prepared wet, dry, or crumbled on top of your dog’s existing food as a supplement.

And here’s part 2. I love the heart shapes! They also have freeze-dried treats that are heart-shaped. So sweet!

Part 2 of the #StewartPet Freeze Dried Dog Food experiment. A video posted by @bellesouthblogs on

We tried several different ways of feeding Sebastian, but in the end, we discovered that he really doesn’t care for the wet food. I ended up handing him the patties whole so he could eat them for dinner. He can always drink his water separately (and he does; we always keep out a ton of water for this little guy.)

The Freeze-Dried Naturals Patties are available in beef and chicken flavors. As you can see, there are extremely simple ingredients to these foods. And frankly, I think they’re amazing. Sebastian kinda digs them, too.

So, if you are looking for something new to feed your dog, give this a try. I recommend easing your dog into any new diet by gradually introducing and increasing the new food with the old food, and also to pay attention to your dog’s reaction. Gas and dramatic changes in stool can indicate issues – and excessive scratching and watery eyes can mean allergies. But as with humans, we typically have to test our animals to figure out what is best for them.
