I am not a medical professional, but I do know a bit about Konjac and Charcoal and their tremendous absorption properties when taken internally. I take Konjac supplements in the form of Glucomannan, and those pills absorb a glass of water and expand just like a sponge.

Likewise, Charcoal is so absorbent that supplement bottles warn against taking it if you are on medications because the charcoal will render them useless.

So, what about external absorption? I gave The Japanese Konjac Sponge Bamboo Charcoal Facial Cleanser Puff a try on my combination skin.

Unused, the sponge is extremely hard and tough. It’s got a rough texture.

20150209_213505

I recommend not running water over the sponge, but rather immersing the sponge in warm water for about three minutes. Afterwards, it becomes soft and squishy – but you can still tell by the feel that it’s going to have scrubbing power without too much abrasiveness.

20150209_213646

You can either use the sponge alone or with your favorite cleanser. I opted to use it with my regular facial cleanser and moved it in circles on my face.

IMG_20150304_202704

I patted my skin dry, followed up with a moisturizer, and slept. It really left my face feeling clean! I have a serious problem with acne and oil in my T-zone, and this is excellent for an all-around clean. Especially since I was previously using my fingers. This makes quite the difference!

When you’re finished with the sponge, you’ll want to hang it in a dry place. I do not recommend hanging it on the sink or in your shower. I opted to install a hook next to my mirror, and there it has plenty of room, and my bathroom doesn’t get so steamy that the sponge would collect mold. You may want to hang it outside your bathroom depending on the size and frequency of use. But definitely do NOT keep it in a dark, damp place!

It’s recommended that you use the sponge no more frequently than every two days. Even though it is very gentle on the skin, it still has two very absorbent components, so you won’t want to dry out your face.

I think this is a great product, and probably one I will replace when the time comes. You can purchase the sponge from several online retailers, including Amazon, where it is currently on sale for $11. For a complete list of retailers, visit the Japanese Konjac Sponge Official Website.

Hey, have you heard about Chromium Picolinate? I remember first hearing about it about 15 years ago. I was given a bottle of supplements, I was told they would assist with weight loss, and I gave ‘em a shot. They didn’t work then.

But what if you combined the appetite-suppressing power of chromium picolinate with a breath mint that lasts three hours? I mean, surely you won’t want to eat when there’s a breath mint dissolving in your mouth, right?

Oh, I wish I could tell you great stories about SuppressMints. But I have to be honest: While it is amazing as a breath mint, it tastes great and it does last a while, there are other characteristics that just place this in my giant file of failed weight-loss miracles.

Here’s how the SuppressMint works: Pop a tiny, dot-sized mint into your mouth. Wet it with your tongue. Then, using your tongue, you move the mint up to a place along your gumline. Then wait as the mint adheres to your gumline and dissolves into this opaque gel for over the next three hours. I hope I have pictured for you how unattractive this is.

I have tried these mints many times over the past several weeks. In the morning after breakfast. In the middle of the day in lieu of lunch. At night after I’ve taken my medication and when I know I have the worst snack cravings. These did nothing to curb cravings. Nothing. Not for lack of trying. All I found myself doing was having troubles drinking and eating. It just isn’t fun with these. I may use them again as mints, but that’s where it ends.

I always wish that these weight-loss and appetite-curbing remedies will work, but rarely do I find that to be the case. If you want to try these, they are available for purchase on SuppressMint.Com for $19.95 for the first month’s supply (100 mints) at $19.95. But I recommend saving your money – keep good foods around, and burn more calories than you consume.

Many of you know my rule about portable device chargers: You can NEVER have too many. The Lifeguard MINI 1 may not be the most advanced portable charger in the market, but it is a solid product for when you just need to hold a charge on one device.

Like any basic portable chargers, the Lifeguard MINI 1 fits in your hand has one micro USB port and one USB port. It comes with a micro-USB cable and an iOS-compatible lightning cable. I recommend plugging in your Lifeguard MINI 1 overnight before using it, as it does take a while to carry a full charge.

One issue I ran into is that the charger became very warm while I was charging it, so I suggest keeping it away from, say, a power strip that has a lot of other cords plugged into it. Once I moved it, it was just slightly warm, which is to be expected with these chargers.

For us Android and Kindle users, another important thing about these chargers is making sure the cords actually fit into AND work with your device. I have had quite a few issues with other chargers having cords with Micro USB plugs that work just fine when powering up the charger, but switch ports and the cord is completely unable to charge your device. (You will see a LOT of this in Amazon reviews of chargers, so keep this in mind and ask questions!) I didn’t have that problem with the Lifeguard MINI 1. Even though if I encountered this problem it could easily be remedied by using any of my existing cords, it’s nice to know I have something in the box, ready to plug in, that avoids this issue altogether.

You can purchase the Lifeguard MINI 1 Portable charger here. At $21.97, it is a great price for a single-device charger that comes with all the device cables you need, AND an 18-month money-back warranty. Trust me – as someone who goes through chargers like tissues, this matters!

How many bottles of detergent would it take for you to do 1,000 loads of laundry? How many weeks? Let’s say you use a 100-ounce bottle of detergent that does 64 loads. That means 1000 loads of laundry would take you 15.625 100-oz bottles of detergent. How many detergent bottles do you buy in a year? How much do you spend on them?

Crystal Wash is amazing. It will do 1,0o0 loads of laundry with NO soap. NO perfumes. NONE OF THAT. And does it work? Oh, let me tell you, it does.

I have used it to wash my dog’s stinky clothes. Bedsheets. Socks. Underwear. Yoga pants. Spanx! And it all comes out smelling and looking great. It even works on that load of laundry you accidentally left in the washer last week. Check out this two-parter:

Mom on Christmas Day, 1952

My mother was born on March 2, 1948. The only child of a WWII vet and the red-haired, Rita Hayworth lookalike he fell in love with, my mom was named Rita after her dad’s favorite pinup.

My mom had already married, obtained an education degree and given birth to two boys by the time I was born in 1977. Mom was a member of the Women’s Lib movement, so when she finally gave birth to a girl, it was a pretty big deal.

Mom and the Most Awesome Baby Of 1977

She hasn’t told me for sure, but I like to think my debut into her circle of feminist friends was about the same as when Simba was introduced in The Lion King. She held me up into the sunrise, Elton John sang “The Circle of Life,” and everyone just stared speechless, their mouths agape in awe.

My mother was determined to raise me as a smart woman. She strolled me as an infant in an ERA parade, tuned the TV into Dan Rather and the McNeil-Lehrer News Hour every evening, and maintained a World Book Encyclopedia collection.

My mother was an elementary school teacher until I was five years old. When I

Mom standing in front of a portrait of John Wesley

was seven, she commuted to Dallas to attend seminary at Southern Methodist University. I spent a week with her and I was, of course, loved by her classmates. She met some of her closest friends at SMU and after receiving her Master of Divinity, she was ordained as one of the few female ministers in Arkansas at the time.

Mom and I had some struggles. It was hard for me to be without my mom during the week, and hard after my parents split up and we moved around every couple of years.  My mother also developed some health problems, including diabetes, when I was in college. But we grew together and became a team, an undeniable force.

For more than six years, my mom and I lived several miles apart as I became a reporter in Louisiana and northwest Arkansas and she went on disability leave as her health problems increased. Circumstances eventually brought her to my neck of the woods. She was headed up to her new condo on January 31, 2009, just as I was being laid off from my final newspaper job.

Me, Ancient Aliens Hair-In-Chief Giorgio Tsoukalos, and Mom, Summer 2011

I’ve lived with my mother since February 2010. In 2012, my mother was diagnosed with renal disease, and has been on dialysis since.

Living with Mom has has allowed me to be her primary caregiver, to work two fulfilling jobs, and also to be a mom to The Best Dog In The World.

We hang out, watch MSNBC or shows on History about aliens or pawning/picking, and we have miraculously stayed a team after all these years. Still not sure how we do it. But we do.

In 2012, mom and I joined together to attend our local Unite

Mom and me at Unite Against The War on Women Rally, Fayetteville, Arkansas, 4/28/12

Against The War on Women rally.  Although my mom is older and her health sometimes prohibits her from being able to be as socially and politically active as she was, she still has that fire, that passion and that drive that (I hope) she passed along to me.

She is now a powerful voice from her desk, where she shares her knowledge, experience and humor with friends old and new.

Love you, Mom!

Hey, this is kinda pretty. And it's even in my kitchen! It also came from the Schwan's freezer truck. I know what time it is.

As a female blogger, I feel the pressure quite often to take gorgeous photographs of food that I’ve made myself. Here’s the deal: I cannot make pretty food.

I actually find myself unfollowing foodie Pinterest boards because they make my feed look like the Boulevard of Broken Dreams. There are many reasons you won’t see pretty food photos here:

I have an extremely tiny kitchen. I live in a condominium with a very small kitchen space. It’s about the width of a hallway and the length of four upright refrigerators. Counter space is rarely available. There’s no room for prepping, or getting bags of chips or toaster cords out of the way to take any photos.

A hot dog, sitting on Fiestaware. On the stove, because the stove is the only counter space. I guess the hot dog doesn't look bad, but can you really screw up a hot dog?

A hot dog, sitting on Fiestaware. On the stove, because the stove is the only counter space. I guess the hot dog doesn’t look bad, but can you really screw up a hot dog?

There’s very little natural light in my home. Yes, I know photos are taken best in natural light; unfortunately there are no windows in the kitchen. We have a backyard that I’ve used to take jewelry photos, but I really am not interested in getting a bunch of ingredients out in the same place where my dog frolicks and gets stinky. Drink recipes? Maybe! Oh, and you can forget about me getting a lamp or other extra lighting. Where’s it going to go?

I simply cannot make food attractive. Believe me, I’ve tried. And every time I have failed miserably. When I frost cupcakes, they look the same as they did when I was four.

20111204_190756

My cupcakes. I know you wouldn’t buy these at a bakery! (Know what, though? They sure were tasty.)

My parents did not make food attractive. Dad did most of the cooking, and it was for function. He made great stuff – wow, his Moo Goo Gai Pan was amazing! But there was really no need to make food attractive. If we entertained, we got cheese and fruit platters from the store. Meanwhile, when mom made a cake, she baked it in her trusty cake pan that she probably got when she was married. It would come out frosted like a four-year-old, and usually with those candy letters on it. You think my mom actually wrote on cakes? No way.

Hey, this is kinda pretty. And it's even in my kitchen! It also came from the Schwan's freezer truck. I know what time it is.

Hey, these chicken enchiladas are kinda pretty. And it’s even in my kitchen! It also came from the Schwan’s freezer truck. I know what time it is.

I am a caregiver who doesn’t have time to learn to make pretty food. The deal with being an unpaid caregiver is that you have to make an income somehow, so while juggling your patient’s health along with two or three jobs, there isn’t time to learn frosting or piping or how to properly use Pampered Chef products. Also, my mother is really tired from dialysis and all she wants is something that is ready-made for her. We are very thankful for the frozen food aisles at the grocery stores.

Hey, here are some pretty cupcakes. Made by someone else. From Eleven, the restaurant at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Hey, here are some pretty cupcakes. Made by someone else. From Eleven, the restaurant at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.

If you are able to create those beautiful photographs of food, use your photo editing software to make them look good enough for Southern Living, understand that you have my utmost admiration. But that’s not me.

You’ll see my life. You’ll see photos. Many of my dog. But if you see pretty food, you can guarantee it was made by someone else. Here’s to the food and recipe bloggers who are amazing at what they do.

Right now my main concern is trying to figure out how to take photos of my black dog. That is a task in and of itself!

Is my dog black and white, or is he gold and blue?

I was given product in exchange for an honest review.

Every winter, we at the Bellesouth household are plagued with horrible, flaky, dry skin. It’s awful, and no one is safe. Me, mom and the dog. We all start itching like crazy, scratching like crazy, and being driven crazy. Add my mom’s need to limit liquids as a dialysis patient, as well as her recent bout with digestive troubles, and it only gets worse!

But enter Majestic Pure Rosehip Oil. It comes in a whopping 4-oz bottle, and is absolutely AMAZING for treating that winter dryness. My first use of it was when I saw my poor mom using her bathrobe to scratch her back a few weeks ago. I first started scratching her back with my fingernails, then I realized I could be doing more harm than good; as scratching can lead to bloodletting.

So I went and grabbed this Rosehip Oil, put a few drops on her back and rubbed it in. Mom, who already takes prescription drugs for her itching, said it was extremely soothing, and that it really helped her itchy skin. Winter + Diabetes + Renal Disease just makes for misery, and this stuff is great. I also used it on her very dry elbows!

As for me, I have started using it on my nails, since I haven’t been able to get my nails done in several weeks. In spite of all the dishwashing, can opening and typing I’ve done, my nails have stayed pretty strong. I’m not sure if the oil has helped it, but they definitely don’t get soft after a bath anymore!

One thing I would really love to try is using rosehip oil as a scalp treatment. I’ve read that it works wonders for dry scalp (another condition mom and I suffer during the winter), and all you have to do is let it sit in your hair for 30 minutes before rinsing it out. Have any of you tried this?

Major Rosehip Oil turnoff: The smell. There’s just something… off about the scent. I was expecting it to smell like roses since, hey, rosehip – but, naah. The good thing is that Rosehip is used as a carrier oil, so you can mix it with your favorite scented essential oils to make something that softens your skin and smells good!!

You can purchase Majestic Pure Rosehip Oil here.

Do you have any suggestions for Rosehip oil?

It’s time again – time for another faaaaabulous giveaway! This time it is for this amazing gel nail polish kit. I am a huge fan of nail polish, and having a nail artist for a next-door neighbor for the past six years has made me love it that much more! If your nail polish comes off at the drop of a hat, gel is definitely the way to go. It lasts for weeks and still looks good when it’s removed, save for the cuticles where your nails have grown. But enough about me – good luck and I hope you win!
