I was given product for this review. All opinions are my own.

d8bd461882ea4ff819aab43f5a0b8433f1290a3d

Sebastian loves being the test subject for all these dog foods, but I have to say the products I’ve had by Stewart Pet have been the absolute best so far. They have extremely simple and healthy ingredients, switching to them is very easy on his stomach, and he finds them extremely tasty. This time, Sebastian got to try Stewart Naturals Freeze-Dried Patties, and he really enjoyed them.

Ingredients and what they do to the canine body are what I’m going to focus on here.

Sebastian has a really hard time eating foods with corn as the first ingredient. Unfortunately, that is what you’re going to find with the most popular dog food brands. I can definitely see a difference if he eats corn-based food – and it isn’t pretty. Horrible digestive issues. Running outside to do his business. Diarrhea. Loose stools. Now, the vet did tell me corn is an excellent source of fiber, and that although corn gets a bad rap, it can be good for some dogs. My response: Just not for Sebastian.

As a petsitter, I see a lot of what dogs eat. I also happen to see what comes out of dogs’ bodies. This week I am taking care of some adorable chihuahuas who are on an amazing diet. It is a combination of dry, grain-free food, quality canned food, and raw food. They’re extremely easy to clean up afterwards, and their systems are pretty regular.

I’ve taken care of dogs who eat food that you can purchase at any chain drug store, and it is a totally different story. Extremely difficult cleanup. Mooshy stools. impossible to completely get off the grass. Very sad.

But some dogs eat this food and are fine. Just like with humans, every dog’s body is different.

But I know that what you put in a dog can really have an impact on what comes out of him. It’s just like with humans: If your poop looks weird, there’s probably something going on with your diet that you need to change.

Here are the ingredients in Stewart Raw Naturals Freeze-Dried Patties: Beef, Beef Heart, Beef Liver, Ground Beef Bone, Broccoli, Carrots, Beef Kidney, Lettuce, Apples, Ground Flaxseed, Inulin, Salmon Oil, Apple Cider Vinegar, Blueberry, Cranberry, Dried Kelp, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Chloride, Whole Ginger, Whole Parsley, Whole Garlic, Montmorillonite Clay, Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Vitamin E Supplement, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Mixed Tocopherols (as preservative), Vitamin D Supplement.

There’s one ingredient in there that struck me and made sense: Ginger. Ginger is known as a settling agent for nausea. I have read that Ginger is great to settle a dog’s stomach and even calm him down before a long car ride. So it made sense when this food didn’t really result in adverse reactions on Sebastian’s part. There was no dash to the back door. No gas. No heaving. Nothing. He just really enjoyed his food.

And here he is, enjoying his food. The second of these videos shows you but one way to prepare it for your dog. It can be prepared wet, dry, or crumbled on top of your dog’s existing food as a supplement.

And here’s part 2. I love the heart shapes! They also have freeze-dried treats that are heart-shaped. So sweet!

Part 2 of the #StewartPet Freeze Dried Dog Food experiment. A video posted by @bellesouthblogs on

We tried several different ways of feeding Sebastian, but in the end, we discovered that he really doesn’t care for the wet food. I ended up handing him the patties whole so he could eat them for dinner. He can always drink his water separately (and he does; we always keep out a ton of water for this little guy.)

The Freeze-Dried Naturals Patties are available in beef and chicken flavors. As you can see, there are extremely simple ingredients to these foods. And frankly, I think they’re amazing. Sebastian kinda digs them, too.

So, if you are looking for something new to feed your dog, give this a try. I recommend easing your dog into any new diet by gradually introducing and increasing the new food with the old food, and also to pay attention to your dog’s reaction. Gas and dramatic changes in stool can indicate issues – and excessive scratching and watery eyes can mean allergies. But as with humans, we typically have to test our animals to figure out what is best for them.

Never Hungover - the best way to prevent hangovers!

I put my binge-drinking days behind me long ago. Becoming a caregiver and a dog-mom has a way of doing that, because you have things called “responsibilities.” But I do remember those days, and (unfortunately) many of the mornings after. I still know many of you like to go out on occasion and get a break from work, the kids, the spouse, what have you. So in the name of work, science and public service, I decided to conduct a controlled experiment in my home using Never Hungover, a bottle of cheap Blue Raspberry vodka, and Ancient Aliens on H2.

IMG_20150316_180358

Never Hungover is a shot-type drink that is likely being sold in liquor stores near the cash register, along with similar-sized energy shots. Never Hungover has no carbs, sugar or calories. Its main ingredient is aloe vera, which supposedly provides hydration properties. The suggested retail price for one bottle is $2.99, but you can save 20% off your first online order with code 20NH through 3/31/15.

I think it’s a great idea to get a case of these directly from the website and have them at your party as party favors. Place them at the bar, near the cups as they are mixing their drinks.

20150316_201240_20150318200030216

Never Hungover can either be taken as a shot, or mixed in your drink. I sipped the stuff, and trust me… you’ll want to shoot or mix it. It’s also an interesting shade of yellowish-green, which makes sense, considering the Aloe Vera concentration.

20150316_201510

You are supposed to drink one bottle for every four drinks, so I poured four shots of vodka into my glass and added the Never Hungover.

20150316_201731

After mixing and adding some flavored carbonated water and ice, it turned into a very putrid-looking green drink that reminded me of the cocktails my friends and I used to throw together on a whim back in college. In hindsight, I would suggest just shooting it and getting it over with. And buying an alcoholic drink that is not flavored with “Blue Raspberry.”

So, the test. Ancient Aliens happened to be airing, so I decided to play the Ancient Aliens drinking game. It’s pretty simple: You drink every time the narrator is “On location,” every time the narrator says “As ancient astronaut theorists believe/suggest/etc.,” every time the narrator asks a question, every time the narrator appends the question with “And if so…,” and then drink twice every time Giorgio Tsoukalos talks.

Two shows in and it got funnier and funnier, and I got drunker and drunker. All I could handle was one four-shot beverage. I soon passed out for the evening, but not before burning my wrist when trying to turn off my bedside light.

I woke up. I had to be up and at ‘em for petsitting gigs. And you know what? I felt great. NO headaches. NO queasiness. No dehydration. NONE of the symptoms of a hangover in spite of the fact that I made some very horrible decisions, starting with drinking Blue Raspberry Vodka. I was quickly ready to head out and take on my day of visits and walks.

This would be great to order for any upcoming party, or even just to keep on hand for guests if you regularly entertain in the home. I swear this stuff is great. So take it before or while you are drinking, one bottle for every four drinks, and when you sober up the next day, I hope you are as in good of shape as I was.

Enjoy a drink without having to worry about a hangover the next day. Get 10% Off Never Hungover using code ALLNATURAL. Expires 3/30/2015 11:59 PM PST.

I have not had good luck with weight-loss supplements. If you’ve been reading this blog for the past few months, you know that I have given some past weight loss products some less-than-stellar reviews. But I was sent this Garcinia/Cleanse Fast Weight Loss Kit from Team Innovations, LLC to review, so I figured I would give this one a shot since it was a system and not just one bottle of supplements.

There are lots of things this system is supposed to help with: Weight Gain, Sluggishness, Acne, Mood Swings, Gas and Bloating, Sleeping Problems, and Constipation. Let’s go with the cleanse first.

The Cleanse should ONLY be used for seven days. And if you want a cleanse – it works. Overnight. And fortunately it works without cramping, needing to run to the bathroom at any given moment, etc. And I think using it for seven days should be okay.

In addition to essentially being an overnight-acting laxative, it is supposed to remove unwanted toxins and, of course, other elements from your body. As the daughter and caregiver of a kidney patient, I keep up on toxin removal and know that the body already has its own ways of removing toxins. There really is no food or product that is going to rid your body of toxins.

I wish they would. Otherwise my mom wouldn’t need to be on dialysis. But there isn’t even really a kickstarter for your body here. Yes, the cleanse will rid things from your body. No, there is not any conclusive evidence that it removes things that are toxic to your system.

Next is the Garcinia Cambogia. I took it and the Cleanse as directed, and did not notice any changes in my energy levels. I did, however, notice that my skin cleared up. And that was pretty cool. I also can’t report any gas or bloating during this time – even though I was taking a cleanse that would normally cause gas. So those are some good things. However, my weight did not change. I still wanted to have a Fourth Meal late at night. And my sleep patterns were still awful.

BUT. There are some margins of error here. I have sleep apnea and am currently in the midst of sleep studies so I can get a CPAP to treat it. So, as a result, I am basically sluggish all the time. I never get a good night’s sleep. So, if you get 6-8 hours of sleep, do NOT have sleep apnea, and still feel sluggish, this might work for you. I do know of one other person who tried Garcinia Cambogia and said her energy levels went up.

The main thing to remember about these and any supplements is that every body is different. There is not a one-size-fits-all solution. So when picking supplements, you should think critically, look at the results from peer-reviewed studies, and of course talk to your friends and read reviews to see if they worked. This didn’t work for me. It may work for you.

The kit can be purchased for $37.95 here. And ALWAYS consult your physician before taking new supplements or beginning any weight-loss program.

I was given product for my review. All opinions are my own.

20150211_181736

So, we are in the midst of March Madness, which means many of us will be filling up on plenty of snacks for game time. So let’s talk Salsa. The people at SalsaCrazy, who make allegedly amazing Salsa dance instructional DVDs, actually have a line of spicy condiments. They sent me their two salsas to review: Dominate the Dance Floor Habanero Salsa, and Burn the Dance Floor Serrano salsa.

In spite of my love for spicy foods, I am not well-versed in which peppers are the spiciest. I know Habanero peppers are hot, but I wasn’t sure if I had tried Serrano peppers.

So I tried these salsas in order of what I thought would be least spicy to most spicy. I am a person of words, so I figured that Dominating the Dance Floor would not be as harsh as burning the whole thing down. So I tried the Habanero salsa first, on a black bean tortilla chip.

20150214_133337

Holy criminy, this stuff was spicy. So spicy that I immediately had to cut it with yogurt in order to eat.

Now, I am no stranger to spicy foods. I lived in Louisiana, where I do believe hot pepper sauce is sold over-the-counter in pharmacies as eye drops. But holy schneikies, this stuff was – WHOAH! It’s got great ingredients – corn, onions, tomatoes, but those habanero peppers – whooo-howdy! But if you love a good challenge, go for it. I still eat this salsa but very sparingly.

So then, I tried the Burn The Dance Floor Serrano Salsa. I was worried that I would have to handle the stuff with gloves because of my prior experience. So I poured it into a tiny bowl and scooped it up with a tortilla chip. Surprisingly, it was still spicy, but very suited to my taste.

20150317_212550

The flavor of both salsas is amazing. They aren’t too chunky, so I recommend eating them with scoop-shaped tortilla chips. I’m positive they’d also be amazing in your favorite latin-inspired dishes. I am not a cook anymore, so I went straight for the snacking here.

So, let’s say these salsas were plot devices in horror movies. The Burn The Dance Floor Salsa would be the fire on the torches that scared Frankenstein’s Monster all the way up that hill. The Dominate The Dance Floor Salsa would be the fire that burned all of Freddy Krueger’s skin off and turned him into an extremely violent spirit with a knife-hand who gives fatal nightmares to teens.

Got it?

Now, everybody knows somebody who is a salsa afficionado. These would make a great gift for that special someone who loves a good salsa and a bit of a challenge. The Salsas can be purchased at Amazon.com as follows:

Burn The Dance Floor Serrano Salsa, 16 0z. Jar – $14.95 (Prime eligible)
Dominate the Dance Floor Habanero Salsa, 16 oz. Jar – $19.95 (Prime eligible)

So good luck, and try not to burn your face off!

Another day, another external battery charger! This time it is one that should definitely be on your list because it’s sleek, small and very simple to use. It’s the Power Theory Credit Card-Sized External Battery Charger, and I love it.

The best thing about this charger is that it is SO SKINNY! Seriously, it’s about as thick as three credit cards with the same measurements. And instead of being accompanied by bulky power cables, it’s got one that comes right out of the charger and can easily be tucked back in. It also has an Apple Lightning cable adapter inside so you can use it to charge your iOS device.

To charge it, you’ll need access to a USB port, as well as a USB to micro USB cable. it takes about 3-4 hours to charge, and makes for a decent charge time on your device. This is the minimalist’s battery charger! I would seriously recommend this for any trip where you need to pack light. I can see this being used for trips abroad where it’s best to keep your belongings as close to you as possible. It can fit very easily in a travel wallet that can be tucked under your shirt.

Also great if you just want a bit less clutter in your life. I feel my home is where device cables go to die, so I am always looking for ways to minimize cord use!

This is perfect – not to mention cute and very efficient. For right now the item is unavailable on Amazon, and I hope it makes a comeback soon – so keep it in your wish list in case it returns!

Dogs are known for their keen sense of smell. I swear my Sebastian can smell a courier truck from miles away because he always alerts me one minute before the doorbell rings. And if I bring him into a PetSmart, it’s like he is in Heaven!

So I was excited to take Sebastian to PetSmart to get him Purina® Pro Plan® to try out. I have to take caution when selecting food for Sebastian, as anything with corn as the first ingredient results in the two of us staying up ALL night so he can run to the yard and back. Poor baby! But the first ingredient in Purina® Pro Plan® is meat. Not meat by-product, MEAT. In this case, chicken! I’ve learned over the years that quality dog food is extremely important, and that particularly includes the ingredients.

So let’s combine Purina® Pro Plan® with a fun way to train your dog.

Training Sebastian’s nose was important to me when we were taking classes five years ago. Sebastian and I will teach you how to creatively train your dog to use his sniffer by combining three things a dog needs: 1) Food, 2) Physical Activity, and 3) Brain games!

20150310_114326

When you introduce your dog to a new food, it’s important that he know everything from the look and location of the bag, to the sounds that are made when the food is being scooped out, to the scent of the food.

20150310_114009

I find a fun way to entice your dog to a new food is by playing games with it. It makes for great bonding time, and he gets to do so much work just to get a meal that he will be ready for a big nap afterwards.

Here’s an easy trick you can teach your dog to do – the shell game! Once you learn it, you can gear up for a backyard Easter Egg Hunt that you and your pooch will enjoy!

For the shell game, you’ll need the following:

3 “shells,” such as small cups or easter egg halves
Quality dry dog food, such as Purina® Pro Plan®
Thin, flat cardboard (I use the back side of a frozen pizza box)

1. Put some of the dog food in one shell.
2. Carefully place the shell onto the cardboard with the two other shells. Make sure your dog sees which shell has the food.
3. Rearrange the shells, much like in a street shell game or three-card monte.4. Say, “choose!” and point to the shells. Don’t worry if he doesn’t select the right one at first! Just say “Uh-oh!” and let him continue.
5. As soon as he finds the right shell, say, “YES!” and continue to praise him as he enjoys his food!

If it all goes down well, it should look a little something like this:

collage_20150311134308545

With this, you can easily do an easter egg hunt. Sebastian and I have one every Easter! I fill eggs with treats and food, we go out to the yard, and he sniffs out for the eggs. as soon as he finds one, he touches it with his nose and looks at me. I always praise him with a “YES!” right before picking up the egg and putting it in his Easter basket.

And if your dog gets REALLY good at this food-detection thing, he will be able to solve a puzzle like this:

20150311_104543

Purina Pro Plan is under each one of those pegs, and Sebastian got it all!

Video or it didn’t happen, you say? Check out Seabass in action! (Warning: Prepare for my puppy talk.)

Sebastian solves his puzzle. Purina Pro Plan is hidden under the pieces. #ProPlanPet #ad #cbias

When I first got Sebastian, I knew he’d need a brush for his adorable, yet scruffy coat.10532535_10152314767293175_8046439548295183061_n

So I, like any new pet mother, went to the pet store and purchased Seabass this brush with metal bristles sticking out of it. I didn’t think about the amount of pain this brush would cause. But I soon learned that dogs don’t really care for sharp metal objects spaced out and scratching your back.

So after that, I opted for alternatives – softer brushes, as well as de-shedding tools that were more like razors. These are both still great. But the Miracle Coat Double-Sided Grooming Brush is an amazing tool because it can easily get out tangles with one side and give a nice, soft brushing with the other.

On one side of the brush, you see those metal bristles, but they have little plastic tips just like we humans have for our heads. Imagine those brushes without the tips. How horrible would your head feel? The other side has soft bristles that are great for picking up extra hair on your dog.

I was really impressed with the design of this brush – and even more impressed when I used it on Sebastian and he treated it as if it were a nice spa massage.

Another important thing to remember is that a lot of dogs (especially shelter animals) can be really anxious around grooming products. This can make for some behavior issues, whether you’re grooming your pet at home or using a professional. The soft approach of this brush is great for getting a dog accustomed to basic grooming maintenance.

I cannot recall how many products I have reviewed for MiracleCorp just this year – but they make great stuff for pets, from grooming tools to accessories to food and treats. The double-sided brush is a great product that I would absolutely recommend to my clients – even those who have dogs who may be anxious about groomers.

I don’t know if you’re one of those brave souls who can clip your dog’s toenails. I am not. I get his toenails and his hair clipped professionally. When he leaves the groomer, he comes out clean, shorn and happy as a clam, and his little claws are also short, but they are JAGGED and ROUGH.

Typically a few walks on the sidewalk will help naturally file your dog’s nails. But what if it’s cold? What if you live where there is no pavement? What if you just bought a brand-new set of sheets and you do NOT want those jagged nails ripping through them when Sparky pounces on the bed?

Enter the Miracle Coat Nail Shaper. (It sells as the Miracle Care Nail Shaper, but the actual product says “Miracle Coat,” so that’s what I’m calling it.) It’s a barrel-shaped device that fits in your hand and can be easily used to file down your dog’s nails. Just take the nail, roll around the side of the barrel until it’s the shape and texture you want, and you’re done! Some dogs who are ultra-sensitive may not like this, but it is definitely less scary to a dog than clippers or a drill.

Now, you have seen those pedicure devices for dogs that are basically the same as a manicurist’s drill. Sure, they may look easy enough on TV, but I have no knowledge of any pet parent who has successfully used one of those things. I know if I put that running drill in front of Sebastian that he would hide as fast as he could! This is much better.

I don’t recommend using this in place of clipping. If you try to do that, you will end up doing a LOT of filing. And neither you nor your dog have time for that. But it is a great tool to use post-grooming to keep your pooch’s nails smooth!
