If you are uninsured and scared to death to go to the doctor, you really should check to see if the provider networks in your area offer a “self-pay discount” for uninsured patients.
I was surprised to see a 20% discount when going in for my checkup last week – all because I was self-paying.
Granted, this isn’t as cheap as the copays you could pay if you were insured, and likely doesn’t apply if you do have insurance with a deductible. But it is nice to know that you can save a little bit of money just because you happen not to have insurance. I am also not sure if the discounts apply if you choose to be billed by your provider. In my cash-only world I prefer to pay for everything up front rather than get the bill collectors after me later!
I’ve Googled and seen networks offering as much as a 40% discount for services, so it might be good to check locally so you can have access to a doctor and a provider network.
Someday we’ll all have the opportunity to buy health insurance whether or not we have pre-existing conditions, but until then this does offer a tiny bit of peace of mind.
