Eighteen months after my last move, I’ve finally gotten around to unpacking, sorting, donating and repacking all my boxes in the garage, and it all reminds me of how much I HATE moving and how horrible I am at it. I have moved a couple dozen times in my life, and every time it absolutely sucks. The packing sucks. The unpacking sucks. The “keep or pitch” conversations suck. There is nothing remotely fun or exciting about moving, and every time I do move, I suck at it.
I have become gradually better at it, though. In my late teens and early twenties, I’d move from house to dorm/apartment/house by just throwing everything in a box and writing “MISCELLANEOUS” on it. I would repeat this action until I had about 15-20 boxes of unlabeled, miscellaneous stuff and would swear up and down that I’d lost certain items during the move. Today I unpacked a “Miscellaneous” box that included the following items:
– Framed Photographs
– A “Pop-Up Video” Trivia Game
– A college yearbook
– A 1000-piece Norman Rockwell puzzle
– A hand-held document shredder
– A promotional tote bag
– An archaic, four-CD copy of “The Sims 2” for Windows
– Unprotected photos from college
– A styrofoam mannequin head.
WTF. These are all fairly cool things in their own right, but do they belong together? No! Maybe the puzzle and the Pop-Up Video trivia Game.
Also, I get so overwhelmed by all the boxes that I just don’t unpack them. I’ve had to keep a lot of things in storage (Christmas decorations, dishes, towels) but there are some things I genuinely miss. I know it’s going to have to take a lot more packing and unpacking to get this done. The good thing is I’m going to be able to purge a lot of things I know I’m never going to need again, and they’re good enough to donate to someone who could use them.
It’s been a year and a half since my last move. I don’t plan to move anytime soon. People have suggested I leave my state and go to more exciting places. But really, I just don’t want to deal with the moving.
I wish I could be one of those professional organizers, armed and ready with a label gun and clear plastic bins, but I think my time for that is over.
I suck at moving. I hope fully-functioning robots are readily accessible when I have to move again.
