It’s Westminster time!!!! The doggies are here!

Yes, once again it’s time to celebrate the overpopulation of pets with the annual Westminster Kennel Club show!

Even though I know dog-breeding isn’t totally PC, and even though I’m totally going to adopt a mutt when it’s my time to own one, I still love seeing these adorable little hounds prance around for fame and fortune.

The dogs are getting ready now!

Here’s Eric the Beagle, being groomed by his handler and prepared to be the best in his breed since Snoopy.

buuuut I don’t know…He may meet some stiff competition from Cash.

This Welsh Corgi has been trying to find a bathroom all over the damn place.

And the award for Snootiest Names, thus far, goes to Storeyland Autum Holiday and Storeyland Carnival, these two adorable Cavalier King spaniels.

The beagles will not stop! Who? Who will reign supreme Lord of the Beagles?

The show is a great place to meet new friends. These dogs from Massachusetts and Virginia just met today.

“Pssst…you knowwww…I was best in show last year. So how’s about you and me meet for water bowls later?”

I am proud to say that both of my pooches were rescue dogs and have been spayed.

Watching the dog shows on the Tee Vee are a guilty pleasure.

    Dem Beagles are awful cute!

This is one of those rare times we miss not having cable around our house anymore. Even I enjoy watching it.

Oh well… pop Best in Show into the dvd player instead?

These dog show people are not the ones contributing to the overpopulation of shelter dogs. Puppy Mills, amateur ‘backyard breeders’ who make tons of puppies ony for profit, and the whole ‘Designer Dog’ craze are. THOSE are the ones who breed dogs every heat cycle for their entire lives, in order to churn out dogs to sell. They never genetically test their dogs before breeding, and they only care about money.

Actual purebred dog breeders breed rarely, with the utmost care for the dog’s health and welfare, and never sell pet dogs without requiring them to be spayed via a binding contract. They also will TAKE BACK any dog of theirs that a person can no longer take care of. They do not allow their dogs to be dumped or abandoned in a shelter.

Blaming the sport of dog breeding for the shelter problem is wrong. It’s ignorant people who buy ‘cute puppies’ from pet stores (which are ALL supplied from puppy mills) and without doing any research about dogs (and therefore get a breed not suited for their lifestyle, so they dump it), and greedy people who exploit animals for money who are really to blame.
