This is Jeff Marder. I know he looks like a more approachable version of Don Johnson, but let’s forgive him since it was 20 years ago and we were all fashion victims then.
I spent a good portion of this evening searching for him after previous attempts had failed. Jeff was one of my favorite stand-up comics in my adolescence. And it begins…
When I was in 7th grade and had no real social life, my Fridays were typically spent watching the Rosie O’Donnell-hosted Stand Up Spotlight on VH1.
That show had plenty of laughable moments and became a launching pad for many famous comedians and actors, including Martin Lawrence, Doug Benson, Margaret Cho and Lewis Black.
But my favorite comic from the entire series was Jeff Marder. He’s one of those guys who you’d probably recognize if you watched his act. His jokes were grabbed by others and made it to bumper stickers and unattributed quote archives.
Jeff would use two microphones in order to provide comedy for both hemispheres of the brain. In a stream-of consciousness style that was unique for the time, Jeff combined comedy with enough witticism to write a book.
Stand-Up Spotlight was my introduction to this guy, who later appeared on Star Search and HBO’s One Night Stand.
Here’s his act from Stand-Up Spotlight – the act begins at the 2-minute mark:
You can find his other appearances on his Youtube site, The Cyber Altar Of VHS Ghosts. He’s seeking digital copies of anything he’s done, so if you have DVR and HBO Comedy you might want to check the schedule and record his One Night Stand episode.
You’ll find a VHS version of his entire HBO One Night Stand special, as well as commercial work and an appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
He also has a Facebook page, but you’ll have to send him a friend request. I am glad he decided to come out from obscurity and make his presence known to the world again.
