Journalist finds life after layoff

It’s been seven weeks since I was laid off at the Bizzle County Daily Planet.

I figured at this time I would be gung-ho to find one of those 40-hour-a-week “regular” jobs, but the bug just hasn’t hit me yet. For being “unemployed,” I’ve been keeping myself pretty dang busy, still taking on jobs nannying and making sure the Vicious Pit Bull of Doom doesn’t eat the children while I take care of them.

I’m also getting lots of requests for proofreading, editing, writing and consulting on a number of projects.

So where do I go from here? I’m not sure. Do I start calling myself an “entrepreneur?” No idea. All I know is I’ve made friends, I’ve got skills, I’m figuring out ways to earn compensation with said skills.

I’ve been considering making business cards. But what would I call myself? “Go-to gal” seems kind of silly. “Writer” seems boring. “Nanny” seems like – oh lord, I really don’t want to take care of kids whose families I don’t know.

So that’s where I am. And I still have enough cash and time to have a social life. During which time I’m still putting my name out there and still marketing myself.

So. We shall see how this goes.
