My mom loves adventure reality shows. The Amazing Race is just one of them. The season of the show just ended, and the creators of the show have a new series, The Great Escape, premiering tonight (Sunday, June 24) at 10/9c.
The premise of the show: Three teams of two are locked up somewhere. There are keys, maps and clues that lead the teams out of their location. The first team to escape wins $100,000.
Mom and I watched the premiere episode, filmed at the historic (but long-closed) Alcatraz prison. The show is very fast-paced, and in addition to figuring out ways to escape, the teams also have to avoid guards. Alarms also sound off when the teams are on the loose!
I’m not an enthusiast of this genre in television, but one thing I do like is that the show has different contestants every week. That way you can watch the show at your leisure instead of wondering for weeks and weeks who’s going to make the cut.
There’s one problem with the show: It’s dark. It’s often hard to see how the contestants are working their way through. While this makes sense because giving the contestants flashlights would make them easy targets, it would be a lot better if the show implemented infared cameras or some way to let us see the action.
Other than that, the series is four episodes long, so it’s a nice summer filler show. Check out the premiere at 10/9 Central on TNT and let me know what you think!
