I’m still tutoring my student! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! Without giving away too many details it looks like I’ll be teaching him a little while longer.
I also highly recommend Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons for any homeschooling parent, reading tutor or anyone who has a kid who is struggling in reading. I was really having a hard time getting my student to read but I purchased this at the recommendation of a friend and I don’t regret it. It uses the SRA/DISTAR method instead of phonics, and the repetition involved is very helpful.
Also, did you know that there’s a new version of The Electric Company on PBS? They have their own Youtube channel, which has about 200 videos you can watch with your kids. It’s extremely helpful and adds a little something extra. I’m just sad there’s no Morgan Freeman on this one.
My student really likes James Iglehart’s “Silent E” video and makes me play it for him every week. I don’t mind showing it to him because he tends to struggle with the Silent E. And any opportunity I have to get a 15 year old student excited about a song about reading I’m all for it.
Right now we’re finishing up a novel I’m reading to him and I have to think about what to get him next. Any suggestions for an appropriate book to read to a 15-year-old are greatly appreciated. (Note: He really hated the latest book I’ve read him, Crash by Jerry Spinelli.)
