How to turn your yarn stash into an ugly-yet-functional welcome mat

This is what I’ve been working on for most of the week.

It’s an attempt to get rid of the massive yarn stash I’ve developed over the past several months. I got the idea from my friend Meghan, who has been teaching me the art of lefty-crocheting without patterns.

The instructions for this ugly, yet functional crocheted mat are simple:

1) Grab four skeins from your stash.

2) Slipknot the ends of the four skeins.

3) using a P-hook, wrap your multi-stranded yarn around and single-stitch in a giant rectangle.

4) Run out of yarn? Tie another on.

I think in the end it’s going to create a very sturdy rug that will be able to withstand some nasty, dirty feet outside my apartment. It reminds me a lot of the rag rugs you can buy at Wal-Mart for like a dollar or something, but this gives me something to do while watching my Netflix.

So what if it’s ugly? I mean, really, if I wanted to make it cute and pretty I guess I could use coordinating colors from my stash. But this suits me just fine.

And in case you thought i couldn’t make pretty things, I did make this scarf last night and this morning:

Nice scarf! Are you knitting or crocheting?

I notice no one is saying anything about the awesome welcome mat!

I swear that’s a magic trick! First you see this pile of yarn, then *poof* Look what you can do! How cool is that? I have no talents with yarn. My cat does though…

I know, it truly is amazing.

The cool thing is I figure by the time this rug is all worn out I’ll have another stash built up.

I’ll post a photo of the finished product.

Well, it is pretty amazing. I couldn’t do it.

I love the scarf, the other thing, not so much, but good use of stray yarn. Should I send you some of my dead ends?

  • Bellesouth February 8, 2008, 4:46 pm

Nah, I’ve got enough dead ends in my life as it is.

    Jack: Thanks!
