Come out to WELLFEST! 2014 to celebrate being healthy! WELLFEST! 2014 will be held from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Bridges to Wellness, 116 S. Broadway St. in Siloam Springs June 14. It’s a day-long celebration filled with fitness activities for you and the family to enjoy the benefits of being physically active.
In the past year, I’ve been on my own journey to becoming fit. It’s because I don’t want to become a casualty of my genetics.
My mother is 66 years old, and I am her live-in caregiver. She has many complications from diabetes, most notably Stage IV renal failure, for which she goes to dialysis three times a week. My mother has been hospitalized for renal-failure-related issues three times in the past year. I consider it one of my jobs to serve as her caregiver – helping her bathe, driving her when she is unable to, helping her keep up with bills and finances, and offering emotional support and advice.
I also know more about her conditions than she does, and keep up with her dietary and lifestyle needs and at many times must explain to her why she must care for herself and what the consequences are on her health.
In all the work I’ve done as a caregiver, I’ve learned that her conditions are preventable – which is why in May 2013 I decided to start getting healthy to avoid a diagnosis of Type II Diabetes. In the past year, I’ve lost 50 pounds. It hasn’t been easy being active, but it’s been extremely rewarding – and not just on my waistline! I can breathe better, I can do more physical activity – heck, I can make it up three flights of stairs without passing out (and that in and of itself is an accomplishment, lemme tell ya!)
The results are clearly visible, even from last fall:
